Practice identifying equations and finding unknown values in input-output tables with this match-up activity.
Recognize Numerical Patterns in Input-Output Tables
What are some different patterns that might be shown in an input-output table? Students may recognize addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division patterns shown in the tables. Additionally, a combination of operations may be used when determining numerical patterns. With this resource, students will practice determining patterns for input-output tables, writing each pattern as an equation, and finding unknown values to fit a pattern.
To play, students will determine the pattern shown in the input-output table and find the corresponding equation card. Then, students must determine the missing value in the table and find the corresponding unknown value card. Once they have a set of 3 matching cards, students can record their matches on the provided recording sheet.
Through this activity, students will show they can recognize the difference between additive and multiplicative numerical patterns given in a table.
Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding
A team of dedicated, experienced educators created this resource to support your math lessons.
In addition to individual student work time, use this number patterns activity to enhance learning through guided math groups, whole class lessons, or remote learning assignments.
If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, check out these suggestions for keeping students on track with the concepts:
🆘 Support Struggling Students
For students who may need additional support, encourage them to find 2 matches, either the input-output table and a matching equation or an input-output table and unknown value.
➕ Challenge Fast Finishers
After matching, students can create a fourth card for each set, showing a graph on the coordinate grid for each pattern. Students can also use the existing cards as a memory match game with a partner by mixing them up, placing them face down, and attempting to make matches.
