I am here to tell you about an amazing, time-saving maths game – in fact, it’s five games in one!
Have you ever tried to teach numeracy and realised that your students are just… not… getting it!?
Teaching your students about concepts such as fact families isn’t always easy – we know this, which is why we’ve developed heaps of amazing numeracy games and activities.
We love to take old concepts and turn them on their heads to help you show your kids how fun and easy maths can be!
We’re excited to share with you one of our most versatile resources – the Fact Family Find and Flip – Addition and Subtraction (Lower), Fact Family Find and Flip – Addition and Subtraction (Middle) and Fact Family Find and Flip – Addition and Subtraction (Upper)!
A Fact Family is a group of maths facts which use the same number. For example, 3 + 4 = 7 and 7 – 4 = 3!
The Ultimate Maths Game
This addition and subtraction game is designed to show your students the relationship between fact families. The amazing thing about it, however, is that you can use the same cards in 5 different ways!
This means that you can use one game, five times!
You can print this game once, and use it for five maths rotations… five group activities… five lessons of maths.
Without a doubt, printing this humble game will change your fact family numeracy lessons forever.
Independent Fact Family Work
The wonderful thing about this activity is that it can be used for group work AND independent learning.
Simply give the worksheet to students as a whole piece of paper. Students can work out the answer to each question independently. Following this, you can choose how they show the fact families!
Why not ask students to colour in matching pairs in the same shade? Or, alternatively, instruct your students to cut out the fact families and stick them side by side in their maths workbooks.
Fact Family Group Bingo
Traditional Bingo can get a revamp with this game! This game is suitable for 2 – 4 players.
Print off one copy of the fact family worksheet for each student.
Each student takes it in turns to roll the two dice. The student who rolls then finds the matching fact families on their board and place counters on both of the sums.
The first student to get four counters in a row is the winner!
Traditional Fact Family Find and Flip
Print out the game mat for students to play in pairs. Students cut out each game square, discarding the border, and place them face up.
Roll a die – find the addition equation which can be balanced with your answer! Students then find and complete the matching subtraction equation. Flip over both game cards once they have been completed. Be careful though, not every die number has a matching fact family!
Students take turns in playing the game until all cards have been completed and flipped.
Fact Family Memory Game
Play this game in pairs or groups of three. Start with all your fact family squares cut out and arranged face down on the carpet or table.
Students take it in turn to flip over two cards. When they have found two equations that make a fact family they get to keep them! If they don’t match, they place them back face down.
At the end of the game, the student who has the most cards is the winner!
Snap! Your Fact Family
Snap is a game of speed and concentration!
Play in pairs. First, shuffle the cut-out squares and give half to each player, face down.
Players take it in turns to turn a card over and place it on a pile in the middle.
If two cards that make a fact family are placed on top of each other, the players must race to place their hand on the pile and say ‘Snap!’.
The winner gets to keep all the cards in the pile. The game ends when all the cards are used up and in one player’s possession – this player is the winner!
