A 60 minute lesson in which students will count small collections to identify ‘how many’.
This lesson plan includes the following resources:
Lesson Plan
Tuning In
- Students watch, listen and sing along to the Howย Many Fingers? video on YouTube. At the end of the video, ask the students:
- How many fingers are on one hand? Two hands?
- How many toes are on one foot? Two feet?
- When counting a collection, like our fingers and toes, how do we know how many objects there are altogether?
Teacher Instruction
- Display and discuss slide 5 ofย theย Counting Collections andย Connecting Numbersย PowerPoint.ย Reinforce that the last number counted in a collection tells us ‘how many’.
- Invite some students to stand out the front. Ask the class to count the collection of students. As they are counting, remind the students that the last number they count isย how many students there are all together. Repeat this two more times, saying the last number louder e.g. one, two, three, four, five!
- Complete the activity on slideย 6 as a class, counting each collection in a whisper but calling out the last number to tell ‘how many’. Check the answers on slide 7.
- Display and discuss slide 8. Call out a number from 1 to 5 and ask the class to make a group with that number of students. After the groups have been formed, discuss how the groups look. Highlight that even though the groups have the same number of people, the groups look different e.g some groups could be sitting, standing, squatting, kneeling or lying down.
- As a class, complete the activity on slide 9. Check the answers on slide 10.
Guided/Independent Learning
- Display and discuss slide 11. Provide each student with a copy of the Counting Collections to 20 Worksheetย and a blank template. Ask the students toย complete the worksheet, first by counting how many objects are in each collection, then using theย blank template to create their own small collections.
- Monitor and support the students as they complete the task. Once the students haveย finished, correct the worksheet as a class. Encourage more confident students to share their small collections.
Wrapping Up
- Place the students into small groups. Provide each group with a set of 1 to 20 Dump Truck Number Cards. Ask the students to order the cards, then place counters on the back of each dump truck to match the number written on the side.
Differentiation
Extending Students
- Encourage more capable students toย create 2-digit collections of objects.
Supporting Students
- Invite less confident students to work in small groups with the teacher or teacher aide and create single-digit collections of objects.
