Lesson 9: Introduction to Number Lines
A 60 minute lesson in which students will identify the basic features of a number line.
This lesson plan includes the following resources:
Lesson Plan
Tuning In
- Students watch and listen to the Number Lines Basics Song video on YouTube. At the end of the video, ask the students:
- What are number lines?
- How can number lines help us with place value?
- Where might you see number lines in the real world?
Teacher Instruction
- Display and discuss slide 5 of the Introduction to Number Lines PowerPoint. Highlight the fact that number lines are a pictorial representation of real numbers, evenly laid out on a straight line.
- Display and discuss slides 6-7. Complete the activity as a class on slide 7, then check the answers on slide 8.
- Display and discuss slide 9. As a class, place the numbers from 1 to 20 in a straight line using the Odd and Even Number House Cards.
Guided/Independent Learning
- Display and discuss slide 10. As a class, complete the activity on slide 11 and check the answers on slide 12.
- Display slide 13 and explain how to complete the activity, demonstrating an exampleย on the board.
- Place the students into small groups. Provide each group with a dice, some pegs and a copy of the Number Line Car Race. Monitor and support the students as they race along the number line. The first player to reach the end of the number line is the winner.
- Once the students have finished playing, invite them to share how the positioning of the numbers helped them to play the game.
Wrapping Up
- As a class, rewatch theย Number Lines Basics Songย video. Encourage the students to sing along.

- Invite less confident students to complete the independent activity in a small groupย with the teacher or teacher aide.
