Lesson 8: Partitioning and Expanding 2-Digit Numbers
A 60 minute lesson in which students will understand how 2-digit numbers can be partitioned.
This lesson plan includes the following resources:
Lesson Plan
Tuning In
- Students watch and listen to the Place Value for First Grade – Tens and Ones video on YouTube. At the end of the video, ask the students:
- How many digits can be in one room?
- What is the largest number that can be in the ones room?
- What do you do when there are too many ones in the ones room?
- As a class, brainstorm a definition for the word ‘partitioning’.
Teacher Instruction
- Display and discuss slides 11-12 of the Exploring 2-Digit Place Value PowerPoint. Highlight the fact that partitioning is the process of breaking a 2-digit number into tens and ones.
- Display and discuss slide 13, then complete the activity as a class. Check the answers on slide 14.
- As a class, complete the Partitioning Numbers – Match-Up Activity. As each number is matched, discuss how many tens and ones are in each number.
Guided/Independent Learning
- Display slide 15 and explain how to complete the activity, demonstrating some examples on the board.
- Provide each student with two dice and a copy of the Roll It, Make It, Expand It! Worksheet. Monitor and support the students as they roll the dice to make and record a set of 2-digit numbers.
- Once the students have finished, discuss the activity. Encourage more confident students to demonstrate some of their answers.
Wrapping Up
- As a class, play the I Have, Who Has? 2-Digit Place Value Game.
Differentiation
Extending Students
- Invite more capable students to use a nine-sided dice to create larger numbers for the independent activity.
Supporting Students
- Invite less confident students to complete the independent activity in a small group with the teacher or teacher aide.
Assessment Strategies
Suggested Assessment Strategies
- used strategic whole class or individual questioning
- observed student participation during learning activities
- recorded student progress on a checklist
- annotated student work samples
- collected and reviewed student work samples
- facilitated whole class or peer feedback sessions
- encouraged student self-reflection
- administered formal assessment tasks.
NSW Curriculum alignment
