Practise rearranging the parts of whole numbers into different combinations with this maths activity.

Rearranging Parts Strategy Activity

This maths activity has students forming a random number between one and twenty with hands-on materials and then rearranging the parts into different combinations.

An additional option to give to your students is for them to write a number sentence below the parts they have created. Once they have built the whole one way they can rearrange the parts to form the number a different way.

Through this activity, students will show their understanding of rearranging parts of a number.

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

A team of dedicated, experienced educators created this resource to support your maths lessons.

If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, check out these suggestions for keeping students on track with the concepts:

🆘 Support Struggling Students

Give students a selection of the single-digit numbers. When they choose a number, have them place that amount of blocks into each part. They can then find a total and rearrange the parts.

➕ Challenge Fast Finishers

Have students who need an extra challenge create as many different combinations of parts as they can. Ask them to record each equivalent number sentence.
