Use this differentiated fractions test for year 3 to assess concepts such as identifying fractions, using fraction models and determining the fraction of a set.

Fractions for Year 3

This differentiated fraction assessment is designed for year 3 students and includes four pages with various types of fraction activities. Each page focuses on a specific skill, allowing students to practice and build their understanding of fractions in different ways. Make sure to check out both versions to see which would be best for your students!

Page 1: Identifying Unit Fractions

This page is designed to help students identify fractions by looking at the given shapes and identifying the fraction shaded. The shapes include squares, rectangles, circles, triangles, pentagons and hexagons. Students must use their knowledge of fractions and their visual-spatial skills to identify the fraction represented by each shape correctly.

Page 2: Shading Fractions and Fractions of a Set

This page is designed to help students practice shading in fractions and determining the fraction of a set. Students are given shapes and directions to shade in a given fraction. This page includes a variety of shapes and fractions, ranging from simple halves and thirds to more complex fractions such as three-quarters and three-eighths. Additionally, students are given sets of objects and asked to shade in a specific fraction of the set.

Page 3: Understanding Fractional Parts

With this page, students work to determine how many fractional parts are left after a given number has been taken away. Students will work to solve problems with visual models and written scenarios.

Page 4: Word Problems with Fractions

This page is designed to help students apply their understanding of fractions to real-world situations. Students are given word problems that involve fractions. This page includes two word problems where students will practise their problem-solving skills and their understanding of fractions in context.

An answer key is included with your download to make grading fast and easy!  

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding 

In addition to independent student work time, use this worksheet as an activity for:

  • Guided math groups
  • Homework assignment
  • Whole-class review (via smartboard)

If students need an additional challenge, encourage them to create equivalent fractions for different representations they see. Additionally, you could teach them basics around adding fractions for them to try with some of the examples.

For students who need additional support, consider using the one-star version of this resource. Additionally, invite students to reference anchor charts and posters that may assist them with understanding fraction concepts.

Turn this teaching resource into a sustainable activity by printing on cardboard and slipping it into a dry-erase sleeve. Students can record their answers with a whiteboard marker, and then erase and reuse them.
