Use this mobile activity when learning about themes to do with Australia Day.

This activity encourages your students to think about what is ‘Australian’ and to think about Australia Day from different perspectives.

Teaching Different View Points on Australia Day

Rather than consider Australia Day as just another celebratory holiday, this mobile activity invites students to consider different opinions on Australia Day.

  • What is something that is Australian? What makes it Australian? Why might people want to celebrate these things?
  • Who might have different ideas about what is Australian?
  • What types of things might First Nations people feel are Australian?

The Impact of Australia Day on First Nations People

Use this mobile as a conversation starter into how life has changed for First Nation people since January 26th, 1788. Encourage your students to research into the First Nations groups in your local area, and the original name of their town.

Differentiating for Your Students with the Australia Day Mobile

For students who need extra help, the research aspect of this activity can be completed as a whole-class or group activity

Students who require extending may use this task as an opportunity to complete the Australia Day Mobile – Upper Years instead which invites discussion on the motto of Australia Day “Reflect. Respect. Celebrate”.
