# Marty's Dogsled - Understanding Which Operation to Use

A teacher-facilitated activity that helps students learn which operation to use in a word problem.

In this ‘human’ sort, the teacher poses a problem, students work with their partners to decide which operation to use and why. Then ‘1 – 2 – 3! the spokesperson for each team move to the corner of the room with the operation posted their team agreed on. The spokesperson discusses why the team chose the operation. Spokespersons change for each problem so no one is in the hot seat for too long. Once the class agrees on the operations, teams work together to solve each problem.

Use with the whole class, in small groups, during guided maths, tutoring or intervention.

This activity includes clear and concise teacher directions, problems to be projected, operations signs, spokesperson labels, an answer key and conversation starters that give students what they need to have meaningful academic discussions.
