Practise Counting Money in 6 Different Ways

Teach your students the value of money, whatever form it’s in!

Through this activity, students will familiarise themselves with British coins and notes and the different ways they can be represented. These include:

This activity covers the following British currency denominations:

  • 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p coins
  • £1 and £2 coins
  • £5, £10, £20, £50 notes

To play, students group the six represented amounts with their corresponding coins, words and images. For example:

British money denominations are represented in 6 ways for students to match.

Scaffolding + Extension Tips

To support students who need help with the concepts, remove the more complex representations from the pack. Add them as students gain more confidence with the task.

Challenge fast finishers who already understand the concept to make one more (different) representation card for each group.

To adapt this game for your whole class, give each student a card and have them walk around the classroom to find their group.

Count Money with These Class Activities Too

We created this resource for your maths rotations as an independent practice activity. We also suggest using it to reinforce your small group and full-class lessons in the following ways.

🧠 Memory Match

Bonus points for this version of the game as it helps students with their memorisation skills! Players will shuffle the cards and lay them all face down in equal rows. Each player takes their turn flipping two cards at a time until either finds a match and sets the pair aside to keep score.

🐟 Go Fish

It’s easy to turn these cards into a game of Go Fish! Shuffle the cards and pass out 7 to each player. The remaining cards go in the centre of the play area. Taking turns, players ask each other for matches.
