How Can You Use Fraction Strips in the Classroom?

We all know that using hands-on materials in maths class can be very beneficial as students learn to represent ideas concretely. Here are some ways you can use fraction strips in the classroom:

  • Introduction to Fractions — Use fraction strips to introduce the concept of fractions to students. Demonstrate how the strips can be folded to represent different fractions and have students practise folding strips to show different fractions.
  • Comparing Fractions — Use this maths manipulative to compare different fractions. Have students line up strips to compare fractions with the same denominator or the same numerator.
  • Adding and Subtracting Fractions — Use your printed strips to demonstrate the addition and subtraction of fractions. For example, have students add a 1/4 strip, ½ strip, and two ⅛ strips to show that they equal the one whole strip.
  • Equivalent Fractions — Students can show equivalent fractions with this handy manipulative! For example, have students show that 2/4 is equivalent to 1/2 by folding both strips in half.
  • Fraction Games — Use fraction strips to create fun games that help students practise their fraction skills. For example, have students race to see who can line up the fraction strips to make a certain number.

Overall, fraction strips are a versatile and engaging tool for teaching fractions in the classroom. By using fraction strips, students can develop a deep understanding of fractions and build their maths skills in a fun and interactive way.
