This lesson contains a link to an external video. Please watch the video prior to presenting this lesson to ensure that the content is appropriate for your students.
Ask the students to write a decimal number between 0 and 10 (up to three decimal places) on a piece of paper. Once the students have written their number, they must stand up and hold their paper in front of them so their classmates can read it. The class must then see if they can arrange themselves in an ascending line without speaking. Time how long it takes the class to complete the task.
Discuss the steps involved in adding and subtracting decimal numbers, as outlined on slide 8 of the Operations with Decimals PowerPoint. Highlight the importance of lining up the decimal points when performing these calculations.
Display and discuss the annotated examples of adding and subtracting decimal numbers on slides 9-10. Highlight the importance of including zero as a place holder when performing these calculations.
Display the review questions on slide 11. Monitor and support the students as they individually complete the questions on the slide.
Display and discuss the answers to the review questions on slide 12. As the students correct their answers, encourage them to raise any queries or concerns.
