Provide the students with a copy of the Making Science Predictions – Worksheet to record their predictions of the experiment. Encourage the students to share their predictions with the rest of the class.
Place the students into pairs. Provide each pair with the equipment required for the experiment.
Display slide 9 and walk through the experiment procedure with the students.
Provide the students with an appropriate amount of time to carry out the experiment with their partner. During the experiment, ask the students:
What is making the balloon move?
Does the balloon need energy to move?
Where is the balloon getting its energy from?
Provide each student with a copy of the Science Observations – Worksheet. Encourage the students to share their observations of the experiment with the class before recording these on their worksheet.
Display slide 10. As a class, discuss the observations from the experiment and how it demonstrated energy in action.
Encourage more confident students to share and explain their observations from the experiment.
Allow less confident students to conduct the experiment in a small group with a teacher or teacher aide.
Suggested Assessment Strategies
used strategic whole class or individual questioning
observed student participation during learning activities
