A 60 minute lesson in which students will convert between 12- and 24-hour time systems.
Revise the content of the previous lesson. Call out a variety of times (in both am/pm notation and 24-hour time) and ask the students to suggest what they might be doing at those times e.g. What might you be doing at 5 pm? At 1400? At 7:30 am? Reverse the task by calling out a variety of activities and asking the students to suggest what time it might be e.g. What time is it if I’m eating dinner? Arriving at school? Getting ready for bed?
Display and discuss the 24-Hour Time Poster. Explain to the students that they are going to practise converting between am and pm notation and 24-hour time.
As a class, play a game of 24 Hour Snap on the BBC Skillswise website. Try a variety of levels, as well as playing with and without the timer.
Provide the students with a copy of the Converting Time Worksheet. Answer any questions, then monitor and support the students as they independently complete the worksheet.
Discuss the answers of the worksheet with the students. Allow the students to correct their own worksheets so they can monitor how well they have understood the lesson’s objective.
