Display and discuss the Dressing Up a Sentence Templateon the board. Read the headings on the table and explain how they help to add more information to sentences.
Pick a sentence from the flash cards and demonstrate how to ‘dress up’ a sentence. Repeat this process with a few simple sentences.
Provide each student with a laminated copy of the Dressing Up a Sentence Templateand a whiteboard marker. Select one sentence from the flash cards and write it on the whiteboard. Invite the students to dress up the chosen sentence by themselves, then share their sentence with the class.
Allow each student to pick another simple sentence flash card, then independently write a ‘dressed up’ version of the sentence on their laminated template.
In pairs, allow the students to share their dressed up sentence with each other. Encourage the students to provide positive feedback, or suggestions for improvement.

Allow more confident writers to write more dressed up sentences.
Allow students who find writing challenging to work with a teacher or teacher aide during the writing activity. Alternatively; use a recording device so that the students can express their ideas verbally before they begin the writing process.
