A 60 minute lesson in which students will locate and represent some common equivalent fractions on a number line.
This lesson contains a link to an external video. Please watch the video prior to presenting this lesson to ensure that the content is appropriate for your students.
Ask the students to sit in a circle. Provide each student with a cookie from the Equivalent Fractions – Cookie Jar Sorting Activityand place the six cookie jars in the middle of the circle. As a class, sort the cookies into the correct jars, according to equivalence.
Discuss the correct locations of each of the equivalent fractions on the number line. Ask the students to draw a smiley face (I can do this!), a straight face (I’m getting there!) or an unhappy face (I need some help!) on the top of the worksheet to indicate their understanding of the lesson’s objective.
Allow fast finishers to add another equivalent fraction to each column on the number line.
Encourage students who are finding the number line challenging to work in a small group with the support of a teacher or teacher aide.
