A 60 minute lesson in which students will apply knowledge and understanding of fractions to a real-world context.
Provide the students with five minutes to ensure that their floor rug design is ready to be presented to the rest of the class.
Explain to the students that they are each going to present their floor rug design to the class. While they are presenting, they must explain:
the reasons behind their colour choices
the logic behind their pattern
whether they think they have correctly followed all the competition rules.
Allow each student in the class to present their floor rug design. Ask questions of the class during the presentations, such as:
Which colours feature on this design? Which colours have been used sparingly?
What do you like about this design?
Are you noticing any similarities in the designs being presented?
Once the presentations are complete, ask the students to hold up their floor rug designs so that everyone can choose their favourite. Conduct a vote by secret ballot and reveal to the class the most popular design.
Collect the students’ booklets in order to monitor each student’s understanding of the investigation’s objectives. Due to the open-ended nature of this investigation, students’ responses will vary significantly.
Allow confident students to speak freely about their floor rug design, with minimal teacher questioning.
Support less confident students to speak about their floor rug design through scaffolding questions.
