A 60 minute lesson in which students will identify and use the correct spelling of common homophones in context.
Use the Homophones Flashcards to quiz the students on the correct spelling of some common homophones. Hold up a picture card and say the word represented on the card e.g. tail. The first student to put up their hand must try and spell the homophone correctly. This could also be played in teams.
Play a game of Stand Up For Your Homophone. Give each student a homophone card. As you read the passage aloud, students must stand up when they hear their homophone in the passage.
Check in with the students as to how they are progressing with the Homophones Practice Workbook – Upper Grades. Encourage students who are experiencing difficulties to work in a small group for additional assistance.
Allow the students to continue working through their workbook at their own pace. Monitor and support the students as required.
Encourage the students to reflect on their learning about homophones. Before collecting the workbooks to monitor student progress, ask them to draw a smiley face (I can do this!), a straight face (I’m getting there!) or an unhappy face (I need some help!) on the cover.
