A 60 minute lesson in which students will identify the four basic needs of living things.
Introduce the students to the four needs of living things by watching the Needs of Living Things video on YouTube. Ask the students:
What are the four needs of living things?
Why do living things need these?
What might happen if living things did not have these?
Display and discuss the four primary needs of pets, as outlined on slides 5-29 of the Pets and Their Needs PowerPoint. Encourage the students to predict the needs of each pet (bird, cat, dog, fish).
As a class, complete the activity on slide 30.
Display the independent activity on slide 31 and provide the students with a copy of the Pets and Their Needs Worksheet. Read through the instructions with the class and answer any questions the students may have.
Monitor and support the students as they complete the activity.
Encourage students who feel comfortable to share their work with the class. Use scaffolding questions to help students explain their choices of food, shelter, water and individual needs for their chosen pet.
Encourage more capable students to present their work to the class.
Allow students who are finding the independent activity challenging to verbalise their ideas with a teacher or teacher aide before commencing the worksheet.
