A 60 minute lesson in which students will apply knowledge of decimals and percentages to a real-world context.
Explain to the students that, now they have calculated the discount amount and sale price of each item in the party supplies catalogue, they will be applying their knowledge and understanding of decimals to purchase food, party decorations and serving supplies for the class celebration.
Allow the students use the party supplies catalogue and the worksheets in the investigation booklet to create their party plan for the end of year celebration. If teachers plan to use the investigation as an assessment tool, students should be encouraged to complete this section of the task independently.
Check on how the students are progressing with their party plan. The speed at which the students will complete this section of the investigation will vary.
Present fast finishers with an additional budgeting challenging for the end of year celebration e.g. drop the budget by an additional 10%.
Simplify the investigation for less capable students by reducing the number of people attending the celebration.
