A 60 minute lesson in which students will apply knowledge of decimals and percentages to a real-world context.
Check on how the students are progressing with the the investigation. Inform the students that they will need to submit their party plans at the conclusion of the lesson.
Explain to the students that, now they have recorded the food, party decorations and serving supplies required for the end of year celebration, they need to make sure they have not exceeded the budget agreed to at the beginning of the task. If their total is over the agreed budget, they will need to make adjustments to their selections and recheck their totals until their costs are under (or on) budget.
Allow the students to complete the End of Year Celebrations – Calculations and Checklist Worksheet. If teachers plan to use the investigation as an assessment tool, students should be encouraged to complete this section of the task independently. The speed at which the students will complete these questions will vary.
Collect the students’ booklets in order to monitor each student’s understanding of the investigation’s objectives. Due to the open-ended nature of this investigation, students’ responses will vary significantly.
Encourage more confident students to share their party plans with the rest of the class before submitting.
Support less capable students through the processes required to calculate their final totals.
