Explain the causes and effects of tropical cyclones, flooding, drought and bushfires, as outlined on slides 30-40 of the Natural Disasters PowerPoint. Encourage the students to identify the key features of these natural disasters on the diagrams.
Use flooding as a case study example of a meteorological natural disaster. Watch the Floods Explained video on YouTube as an introduction to the causes and effects of flooding. After watching, ask the students:
What causes flooding?
What are some of the dangers presented by flooding?
What can we do to reduce the effects of flooding?
Provide the students with a copy of the What are Floods? – Comprehension Task. Read through the comprehension passage as a class and answer any questions the students may have about the content.
Allow the students to work through the comprehension questions independently. Monitor and support the students as required.
Discuss the answers of the comprehension task with students. Allow the students to correct their own worksheets so they can monitor how well they have understood the lesson’s objective.
Encourage fast finishers to write their own comprehension questions about floods, using the information in the passage.
Allow students who are finding the comprehension passage challenging to work in a small group, with teacher assistance.
