A 60 minute lesson in which students will identify the effects of natural disasters and explore how these may be managed.
Display and discuss slide 42 of the Natural Disasters PowerPoint. Allow the students to work in pairs to brainstorm the potential effects of natural disasters and record these as a mind map. Ask each pair to share their ideas with the rest of the class.
Display and discuss slides 43 and 44. Encourage the students to suggest human actions which might fall under each management strategy.
Watch the Introducing Disaster Risk Reduction and Resiliencevideo on the UNISDR website. Pause the video to allow the students to note down natural disaster risk reduction and resilience strategies such as risk assessments, early warning systems and contingency plans.
Provide the students with a copy of the Natural Disasters Effects and Management Worksheet. Read through the natural disaster scenarios as a class. Answer any questions, then allow the students to work through the worksheet independently or in pairs. Monitor and support the students as required.
Discuss the potential risks and management of each natural disaster scenario as a class. Encourage the students to contribute their ideas.
Encourage more capable students to come up with their own natural disaster scenario, identifying potential risks and ways in which to manage these.
Allow students who are finding the task challenging to work in a small group, with teacher assistance.
