Operations with Decimals and Percentages Unit Plan - Year 5 and Year 6 | Lesson 12 | 60 minutes

An assessment task in which students will demonstrate an understanding of decimals and percentages.

## Preparation

##### Equipment

- Pencil
- Sharpener
- Ruler
- Eraser

- annotated student work samples
- collected and reviewed student work samples
- facilitated whole class or peer feedback sessions
- encouraged student self-reflection
- administered formal assessment tasks.

## Resources

#### Common Core State Standards alignment

Grade 5 > Standards for Mathematical Practice > Number & Operations in Base Ten > Understand the place value system > **CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.A.2**

Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10.

Grade 5 > Standards for Mathematical Practice > Number & Operations in Base Ten > Understand the place value system > **CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.A.3**

Read, write, and compare decimals to thousandths.

Grade 5 > Standards for Mathematical Practice > Number & Operations in Base Ten > Understand the place value system > **CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.A.4**

Use place value understanding to round decimals to any place.

Grade 5 > Standards for Mathematical Practice > Number & Operations in Base Ten > Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths > **CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.B.7**

Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.

Grade 6 > Standards for Mathematical Practice > Ratios & Proportional Relationships > Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems > CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.RP.A.3 > **CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.RP.A.3.C**

Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g., 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent.
