A 60 minute lesson designed to introduce the concept of forces and to explore push and pull forces.

Place an item, such as a wooden block, onto a desk. Ask the students to suggest ways to make the block move e.g. pushing it with a toy car, pulling it with some string, knocking it over with your hand. Record the ideas of the students in a mind map on the board.
Display and discuss slides 5-8 of the Push and Pull PowerPoint. Discuss the terms ‘push’ and ‘pull’ and encourage the students to suggest further examples of these.
Using the mind map from the previous activity, sort the ideas on the board according to whether they are a push or a pull.
