A 60 minute lesson in which students will read, interpret and construct timelines.
In small groups, ask the students to brainstorm the types of events that might be displayed on a timeline. Allow the students to share their ideas with the class and record these ideas as a mind map on the board.
Display a timeline on the whiteboard, such as the World War 1 Timeline. Alternatively, a range of interactive historical timelines can be accessed via the Soft Schools website. Discuss the features of the timeline e.g. title, years, events, arrows, scale. Ask questions to ensure that the students understand how to read the timeline before moving on to guided/independent learning. Some examples might include:
