Roll Call
Mark the roll and record any absences on the Relief Teaching Day Feedback Form. Identify any students with special educational needs and ensure you are aware of any assistance they may require throughout the day.
Rules and Routines
Establish rules and expectations for the day with the students. Familiarise yourself with the regular routines of the class, as well as any additional activities happening during the day e.g. assembly.
Morning Session
Literacy – Spelling
Display the Syllables – Talk Like a Robot Poster on the board. Give the students a list of words to ‘talk like a robot’ with. Count the syllables, then discuss the answers as a class. Divide the class into small groups and provide each group with a copy of the Syllable Game. Monitor and support the students as they work together to sort the nouns into the same number of syllables, then correct the activity as a class. If time permits, distribute a copy of the Syllables Worksheet to the students. Allow the students to record the number of syllables for each word on the worksheet, then correct together as a class.
Literacy – Writing
Revise with the students the purpose of an informative, persuasive and imaginative text. Show the students a picture of a park and demonstrate how different texts can be written, depending on the author’s purpose. For example, to inform the reader the writer might give facts about the park; to persuade the reader the writer might try to argue that the park needs new equipment; to entertain the reader the writer might tell a story about an event taking place at the park. Divide the class into small groups and provide each group with a copy of the Author’s Purpose – Sentence Writing Game. Monitor and support the students as they play the game and construct informative, persuasive and imaginative sentences about different nouns in the game. Ask the students to write their sentences in their workbooks and encourage volunteers to share these with the class.
Middle Session
Numeracy – Time
Revise with the students the features of an analogue clock. Provide each student with a Clock Template and a split pin. After constructing the clock, ask the students to sit on the floor with their clocks. Call out different ‘o’clock’ and ‘half past’ times to the students and ask them to make the time on their clocks.
Numeracy – Time
Provide the students with a copy of the Analogue Clock Worksheet. Monitor and support the students as they complete the worksheet, then discuss the answers as a class. If time permits, play a game of ‘What’s the Time, Mr. Wolf?’ to consolidate the students’ understanding of analogue time.
Literacy – Shared Reading
Choose a picture book to read and share with the students.
The Arts – Visual Arts
Display the example of the Picasso Inspired Art from the 8 Classroom Art Activities Inspired by Famous Artists blog on the board. Provide the students with the materials to create the artwork. Monitor and support the students as they create their Picasso inspired self portraits. Encourage volunteers to share their artworks with the class.
