Roll Call
Mark the roll and record any absences on the Relief Teaching Day Feedback Form. Identify any students with special educational needs and ensure you are aware of any assistance they may require throughout the day.
Rules and Routines
Establish rules and expectations for the day with the students. Familiarise yourself with the regular routines of the class, as well as any additional activities happening during the day e.g. assembly.
Morning Session
Literacy – Grammar
As a class, revise the function of nouns, verbs and adjectives. Distribute a copy of the Nouns, Verbs and Adjectives – Sorting Task to the students. Monitor and support the students as they independently complete the sorting activity. Once the students have finished, discuss the answers as a class.
Literacy – Writing Task
Display a list of nouns, verbs and adjectives from the sorting task on the board. Ask the students to pick one noun, one verb and one adjective from the list. The students then use their chosen words to independently write an imaginative text. Once they have finished, encourage volunteers to share their stories with the class.
Middle Session
Numeracy – Number and Place Value
Place the students in pairs. Provide each student with a Place Value Mats – Hundreds and Thousands game board, base ten blocks and a dice. With their partner, students race each other to 100. Each player takes turns rolling the dice and collecting the corresponding amount of base ten, trading when needed. The first to 100 wins the game. As an extension, encourage the students to subtract and race each other back to zero.
Numeracy – Money and Financial Matters
Place the students into small groups. Provide each group with a copy of the Australian Money Match-Up Game. Monitor and support the students as they match the cards to show different ways that a certain monetary amount can be represented. Once the students have finished, discuss the answers as a class. As an extension, encourage the students to combine different money cards and calculate the total amounts.
Afternoon Session
Literacy – Independent or Shared Reading
Allow the students to independently read an appropriate book of their choice. Alternatively, choose a book to read and share with the students.
The Arts – Visual Arts
Display the example of a Line Drawing on the board and discuss how the lines have created different shapes and patterns. Provide each student with a blank piece of paper. Instruct the students to use a ruler to draw several different lines from one edge of the paper to the other. Their lines should cross over, making different shapes. Ask the students to use different colours to colour in the patterns they have created. When the students have completed their line drawings, encourage volunteers to share their artwork with the class.
