Full Day Plan
Mark the roll and record any absences on the Relief Teaching Day Feedback Form. Identify any students with special educational needs and ensure you are aware of any assistance they may require throughout the day.
Rules and Routines
Establish rules and expectations for the day with the students. Familiarise yourself with the regular routines of the class, as well as any additional activities happening during the day e.g. assembly.
Literacy – Reading Comprehension
Distribute a copy of the Comprehension – Public Speaking Day to the students. Read the text as a class. Monitor and support the students as they independently complete the comprehension questions. Once the students have finished, discuss the answers as a class.
Literacy – Writing Task
As a class, discuss the events from the comprehension text and the feelings of the main character. As a class, brainstorm how a person might overcome a fear. Using the ideas suggested by the class, ask the students to independently write a narrative text about overcoming a fear. Once they have finished, encourage volunteers to share their stories with the class.
Numeracy – Number and Place Value
Provide each student with a Fraction Fact File Worksheet. Assign each student with a fraction, or allow the students to choose their own fraction. Ask the students to write their fraction in the box at the top of the worksheet. Monitor and support the students as they complete a range of activities to describe their fraction. When the students have finished, correct the worksheet as a class.
Numeracy – Time
As a whole class, revise the concept of a timetable and when these might be useful. Distribute a copy of the Reading and Interpreting Timetables Worksheets to the students. Monitor and support the students as they independently complete the worksheets. Once the students have finished, correct the answers as a class. If time permits, provide the students with the Developing a Timetable Task and ask the students to complete the task independently.
Literacy – Independent or Shared Reading
Allow the students to independently read an appropriate book of their choice. Alternatively, choose a book to read and share with the students.
The Arts – Drama
Place the students into small groups. Provide each group with a set of Narrative Sentence Starter Cards. In their groups, students choose three scenarios to practise and act out in front of the class. The class tries to guess the scenario being played out. If time permits, repeat the activity; or encourage the groups to write down their own scenarios to act out for the class.
