A 60 minute lesson in which students will use subitising to count small collections.
This lesson contains a link to an external video. Please watch the video prior to presenting this lesson to ensure that the content is appropriate for your students.
Students watch and listen to the Meet Ten-Man video on YouTube. Stop the video at 2 minutes and 37 seconds. At the end of the video, ask the students:
How many acorns were on Ten-Man’s snowball?
How were the acorns arranged?
Did the arrangement of the acorns help you to count them more quickly? Why?
Introduce the word ‘subitising’ to the students. As a class, brainstorm and record on the board what they think subitising might mean.
Display and discuss slide 5 of the Subitising Small Collections PowerPoint.Reinforce the concept that subitising is when we instantly identify ‘how many’ objects there are without individually counting each one. Add any new ideas to the class brainstorm.
As a class, complete the activity on slide 6. Ask the students how they counted each collection so quickly. Check the answers on slide 7.
Display and discuss slide 8. Place the students into pairs. Provide each pair with a pre-cut and laminated copy of the Subitising 1 to 12 – Snap and Memory Game. Ask the students to use the cards to play a game of ‘Subitising Snap’ by calling ‘snap’ each time they match a numeral to its quantity of dots.
After an allocated time of playing the card game, sit as a class in a circle on the floor. Place a set of the cards in the middle of the circle and invite students to match a number card to its dot quantity card. Repeat the process until all the cards have been matched up.
Provide each student with a copy of the Subitising Numbers to 10 Worksheetand a blank template. Ask the students to complete the worksheet, first by recording how many objects are in each collection, then using the blank template to create their own subitised collections.
Monitor and support the students as they complete the task. Once the students have finished, correct the worksheet as a class. Encourage more confident students to share their subitised collections.
Students watch, listen and sing along to The Subitising Song video on YouTube. During the video, ask the students to subitise and call out the collections displayed on the screen.
Encourage more capable students to use larger numbers during the independent task.
Allow less confident students to use counters to make each subitised collection from the worksheet.
