A 60 minute lesson in which students will describe the features of a present day toy.
Display the opening screen shot of the What’s in the box #8 – Peppa Pig video. Inform the students that one of the boxes has a present day toy inside it. Before playing the video, ask the students:
Which box do you think the toy might be in?
What toy do you think is in the box?
Make a class tally of the students’ ideas.
Students watch and listen to the video clip. After watching, ask the students:
What was the toy made from?
What can you do with this toy?
Why would this toy be fun to play with?
Who would this toy be for?
Display and discuss slide 9 of the Toys – Past, Present and Future PowerPoint. As a class, use the suggested questions to describe the toy Lego. Encourage the students to describe other features of the Lego. Discuss the answers on slide 10 and add the students’ suggestions.
Display and discuss slide 11. Provide each student with a copy of the Popular Toys From the Present Day – Worksheet. Ask the students to think of a toy they play with often. Allow the students to illustrate and describe the toy on the worksheet.
Once the students have finished, ask volunteers to share their drawing and descriptions of their modern day toy with the class.
Display and discuss slide 12. As a class, brainstorm some possible toys of the future.
Encourage more capable students to assist others and share their ideas during group work and class discussions.
Encourage less confident students to participate in group work and class discussions at a level at which they feel comfortable.
Provide students with page 2 of the worksheet. Allow the students to illustrate their toy, but not answer the questions.
