Encouraging Children to Talk about Addition Strategies

In mathematics education, there has been a shift from focusing on merely finding the ‘right’ answer to developing a deep conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts. One crucial aspect of this shift is encouraging children to talk about the addition strategies they have used. By providing opportunities for students to discuss their approaches, teachers can unlock their mathematical minds, foster critical thinking skills, promote metacognition, and cultivate a collaborative learning environment.

This card set is a great teaching resource for helping students with:

  • constructing and deconstructing numbers
  • modeling double digit addition
  • using a variety of addition strategies to solve double-digit addition problems.

What are Number Talks?

Number talks are meant to be short, daily maths activities that allow students to have meaningful and highly engaging conversations about maths. Simply show students the front of the card, and ask the prompts on the back. These exchanges will lead to the development of more accurate, efficient, and flexible strategies for students.

Download and Discuss!

Print out the task cards front and back so that the prompts are displayed on the back of each card.

The cards can also be put on a ring for added convenience.
