Uses These Ideas for Procedural Writing in Multiple Ways

This resource may be simple, but it has multiple applications when it comes to teaching procedural writing to your students! Here are just a few ways our task cards can be used in the classroom:

  1. Whole-Class Writing Projects—Shared writing helps your students become familiar with the structure and text features of a particular text type before attempting to write a text independently. As a class, vote on a task card to use as a whole-class writing prompt, then guide students through the process of writing a procedural text together. This collaborative approach allows students to contribute ideas while deepening their understanding of the text type.
  2. Small Group Activities—This is a variation of the above. Divide the class into small groups and assign each group a task card (or have them vote as per the previous activity). Encourage collaboration as students brainstorm ideas and outline the steps for their procedural texts. Groups can then share their writing with the class for feedback and discussion.
  3. Independent Writing Activity—Allow students to select a procedural writing topic idea and use it as a prompt for independent procedural writing practice. Rotate the cards periodically to keep the activity fresh and engaging. This activity could also be used as an assessment tool to evaluate students’ understanding of procedural writing concepts.
