Teach How to Write a Procedure

Teaching procedural writing this term? If you’re looking for a comprehensive resource to introduce your students to the structure and language features of this writing genre, then this slide deck is for you!

This 15-slide teaching presentation will help you explain the purpose, structural elements and language features of procedural writing to your students. The slideshow includes two examples of procedural texts for you to read and analyse with your class, as well as several ‘Check for Understanding’ activities so you can be sure your students are grasping the concepts presented. Links to additional Teach Starter resources are also included in the presentation.

By engaging with this resource, your students will be able to identify the structural elements and language features of procedural texts that work together to achieve the text’s purpose.

Using This Procedural Writing Slide Deck in Your Classroom

This slide deck is an excellent starting point for teaching your students about the purpose, structural elements and language features of procedural writing. Due to the amount of information in the presentation, we recommend covering the content over several lessons. This will enable you to explore each device in greater depth.

Here are some additional activities you might like to consider in conjunction with this procedural writing slide deck:

  • Role-Playing – Students could role-play the “ How to Brush Your Teeth” procedural texts featured in the slide deck. This activity will help them visualise the separate steps in the process.
  • Cooking Day – Students could follow the “How to Make a Cheese Sandwich” procedural text feature in the slide deck to actually make a cheese sandwich! This activity will help them understand the importance of clear and precise instructions when writing procedures.
  • Storyboarding – Students could create a storyboard for the “How to Build a Snowman” procedural text featured in the slide deck. This activity will help them understand the importance that accompanying visuals play in procedural texts.
