Exploring Australia’s River Systems

Australia is a dry country, but it also has many rivers. The longest and largest rivers can be found in the eastern part of the continent. Most of these rivers have had their flows regulated by humans. This means that humans have diverted the water in a particular direction. Quite often, the redirected water is collected into large constructions known as dams.

Wild, free-flowing rivers that have not been interfered with by humans still exist in other parts of the country. Many of these are heritage-listed.
