Teach your students how to add, subtract, multiply and divide using decimal numbers with this comprehensive teaching presentation perfect for upper primary maths lessons.

Teach Students How to Perform Operations with Decimals

At this point in your students’ primary education, they have been taught various strategies for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing whole numbers. Now that they have these skills under their belts, it is time to apply these key skills to decimal numbers. Decimal numbers are combinations of whole numbers and parts of a whole (for example, 12.65), though some decimals contain parts of a whole only (for example, 0.871).

To help your students transfer their skills of performing the four operations from whole numbers to decimals, the expert teacher team at Teach Starter has created this 24-slide teaching presentation. The presentation is set out in sequential order and contains annotated examples of each process to help your students grasp the steps involved in performing each operation.

This operations with decimals slide deck addresses the following content:

  • Revision of decimal numbers and decimal place value
  • Adding and subtracting decimal numbers using a written algorithm
  • Multiplying and dividing decimal numbers by 10, 100 and 1000
  • Multiplying and dividing decimal numbers by whole numbers using a written algorithm

Review questions for each section are included to enable teachers to check how well students are retaining the content presented. Answers for these are also included.

If you’re an Office Suite user, you can download this presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint format. Prefer the Google Suite? Just use the dropdown menu to select the Google Slides version of this resource. In both cases, be sure to operate the presentation in Slideshow mode, as the presentation does contain some simple animations.
