Investigate heat insulators with your students using this engaging science experiment.

Let’s Explore Heat Insulators

Heat passes through some materials easily. These materials are called ‘thermal conductors’. Heat does not pass through other materials as easily. These materials are called ‘thermal insulators’. Thermal insulators are good at keeping hot things hot and cold things cold.

This Physical Sciences experiment allows students to investigate whether bubble wrap, paper towel or tin foil is the best insulator of heat.

Students follow the scientific method to conduct the experiment, and they then complete the worksheets provided.

Heat Insulators Science Experiment

For this science experiment, you’ll need the following items:

  • 3 x ice cubes
  • 3 x snack-size sealable
  • plastic bags
  • 3 x small measuring
  • cylinders (medicine cups
    or similar)
  • Bubble wrap (cut to size)
  • Paper towel (cut to size)
  • Tin foil (cut to size)

This science experiment investigates whether bubble wrap, paper towel or tin foil is the best thermal insulator. Students will hypothesise which material will be the best insulator and test their theories.
