A hands-on senses identification and fine motor activity for younger students.

Use this teaching resource in the classroom when learning how to make observations in science.

This fine motor activity is an ideal way to explore the five senses.

  • Print the resource on thick card to ensure durability.
  • Cut along the dotted lines to create small peg cards.
  • Provide the students with the cards, along with some wooden pegs.
  • Support the students to decide which senses might be applicable to the image on the card, then place pegs on the appropriate sense icons. Often, more than one sense might be applicable. Encourage students to decide whether the sense they’re choosing has a strong connection. For example, while a sponge might make a tiny sound when you squeeze it, the strongest connections are with sight and touch.
