Review verb groups with this 3-page worksheet.

Learn and Consolidate Verb Groups

When teaching parts of speech in your grammar lesson, step your students through their knowledge of verb groups with this handy worksheet.

The worksheet begins with explicit instruction about verb groups and then follows with a gradual release of instruction – from identifying verb groups, to including given verb groups in sentences, to creating entire sentences. The worksheet highlights the fact that verb groups include a main or head verb plus auxiliary verbs that can create tense or modality.

As your students work through the resource they will be gaining a better understanding of sentence structure and how to enrich their writing.

An answer key is included with your download to make grading fast and easy!

Scaffolding + Extension Tips

The Google Slides version of this worksheet can be used to simplify the resource. Perhaps you might include more questions that require students to identify verb groups or you might like to use easier vocabulary.

Students who need a challenge could create a table, similar to that in Question 3, for their peers to complete. Their table could hide sentences, placing the words randomly, i.e. not just forming vertical, horizontal or diagonal lines.

Easily Download & Print

Use the dropdown icon on the Download button to choose between the PDF or Google Slides version of this resource.

Because this resource includes an answer sheet, we recommend you print one copy of the entire file. Then make photocopies of the blank worksheet for students to complete.

To save paper, we suggest printing this worksheet double-sided.

Turn this teaching resource into a sustainable activity by printing on cardboard and slipping it into a write-and-wipe sleeve. Students can record their answers with a whiteboard marker, then erase and reuse.

Additionally, project the worksheet onto a screen and work through it as a class by having students record their answers in their notebooks.
