This Chemical Sciences unit investigates natural and processed materials. Demonstrations and experimental procedures are explored with particular attention given to the scientific method.

It consists of 9 lessons of approximately 60 minutes duration.

The sequence of lessons and suggested time frames should be regarded as a guide only; teachers should pace lessons in accordance with the individual learning needs of their class.

A knowledge check for monitoring student understanding of the unit objectives is included and will require an additional lesson.

Teachers are encouraged to collect samples of students’ work throughout the unit to add to a learning portfolio. These can also be used to assess students’ understanding of the unit objectives.

    A good unit however the 60 minute lesson times are unrealistic. We took 90 mins and still didn't get everything done and I had to condense the lessons. A marking rubric for the assessment would also be helpful.

      Hi Carol, Thanks for your feedback. As it states on the unit landing page, the sequence of lessons and suggested time frames should be regarded as a guide only; teachers should pace lessons in accordance with the individual learning needs of their class. Additionally, we don’t currently provide rubrics for our units. As I’m sure you would understand, all schools are extremely different in the manner in which student understanding is assessed, recorded and reported and we cannot possibly create a rubric that would suit everyone. We do have a comprehensive set of assessment trackers linked to the Australian Curriculum which can be used to monitor student progress.
