Practice making specified amounts with various combinations of British coins.

🐷 Say OINK! for Money Maths Games 🐷

We’ve turned the familiar piggy bank into a hands-on activity for students to practise adding British coins (1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1, and £2) to get a certain amount.

We’ve included 10 piggy bank cards with various amounts already on each. Players will lay the piggy banks in a pile face down and take turns selecting a card. Then, they’ll use the cut-out coins to find the exact matching amount as the one on their pig.

We’ve also included a few blank piggies that you can customise yourself!

Scaffolding + Extension Tips

Support students who need help understanding the concepts by using the editable piggy banks to start with simpler, whole number amounts that involve fewer coins, e.g. 50p.

Challenge fast finishers who already understand the concept to make multiple variations of the amount on their cards.

One Activity = More Money Maths Games

We created this resource for your maths rotation as an independent practise activity. We also suggest using it to reinforce your small group and full-class lessons in the following ways:

✋ Group Activity

Before playing, pass out coin cards to each student and display a piggy bank on your screen for students to make with their coins. Ask students to shout out the combinations of coins they came up with.

✔️ Assessment Tool

Determine which of your students would benefit from extra help with their coin identification by calling students to you one-by-one to determine the coins needed.

🏃 Relay Race

Divide students into two team lines and place various amounts of cut-out coins in between them. Show a piggy bank to the students at the front of each line. The student that first produces a correct amount with the coins wins the piggy card. The team with the most cards at the end of the game wins!
