Fun With Place Value and Rounding Whole Numbers!

As students enter 3rd grade, they are typically introduced to rounding numbers to the nearest ten and hundred. This important skill lays the foundation for other math skills, such as estimating with different operations. Teach Starter has put together an exciting rounding game to help your students strengthen their understanding of rounding 4-digit numbers. Perfectly aligned with TEKS and Common Core Standards, your students will practice rounding numbers to a variety of different places.

This teacher-created resource includes a printable ladder game board, a set of detailed instructions, and thirty number cards for your students to use. Choose between the full-color or low-color options, or consider using the edible version if you want to change some of the numbers.

Tips and Tricks for Classroom Use

Print and laminate copies of the game board and number cards.

In turns, students must round the numbers on the number cards to the nearest 10, 100 or 1,000 (depending on what is decided before starting the game). They move up the ladder on their game board if they round the number up. If they round the number down, they move down the ladder.

The student who reaches the top of the ladder on their game board first is the winner.

More comprehensive instructions on how to play the game are included in the resource.
