How to Run a Classroom Economy With Your Classroom Jobs Chart

Looking for a unique way to get students excited about classroom jobs this school year? Why not run a classroom economy, allowing students to earn “money” for completing their jobs?

Here’s how it works:

  • Brainstorm a list of classroom jobs with your students, and work together to rank them from “easy” to “hard.”
  • Work as a class to assign a dollar value to each job.
  • Open up your jobs list for students to apply to the task they want to take on.
  • When jobs are completed, provide students with their “salary” in the form of fake classroom dollars, which can be exchanged for prizes once a month.

Like a real economy, you can require your students to pay “bills” such as a rental for using their desks. This is a great way to increase students’ sense of ownership in the classroom and reinforce the importance of taking care of classroom supplies. Again, we suggest placing a value on your billable services with your students, guiding them to ensure the bills are lower than their classroom job salaries so they aren’t frustrated.

You can also create a bonus structure that’s aligned with the 5 core competencies of social emotional learning, awarding bonuses (or applying fines) for students’ behavior in accordance with the competencies.
