Generic Literature Study Task Cards

Are you looking for a set of literacy activities that can be used with any picture book, reader or class novel? Teach Starter has the answer!

This set of 14 literature task cards has been designed to help your students engage with and personally respond to literature by exploring the text’s features. The tasks have been specifically designed to be used in conjunction with any literary text, making life easier when it comes to literacy planning!

The tasks address the following story elements:

  • Setting
  • Character
  • Plot
  • Language devices
  • Illustrations
  • Text Structure
  • Vocabulary

Scaffolding and Extension Tips

The beauty of these tasks is their open-ended nature! Students have the ability to engage with the tasks at their own level. More-capable students in particular have the option of taking these tasks as far as they are able to!

In addition to individual work, these cards can also be used for:

  • Guided reading groups
  • Whole-class reviews (via smartboard)
  • Summative assessment

Download, Print, Teach!

Use the dropdown menu next to the Download button to select between the full-color or black-and-white PDF.

You may like to print the cards on cardstock and store them on a binder ring for your students to choose from.

These activities can be completed in a reading center after a read aloud or listening to a book on tape, or as a whole class activity.
