A poster to encourage your students to think about narrative writing.

Use this poster as a visual stimulus when working on narrative writing. This poster includes simple examples to help remind your students to use description and strong sentence starters to grab their reader’s attention.

Strong Sentence Starters

The way a story starts is very important. The first couple of sentences should make the reader want to find out more about your story and keep reading.

Describe it!

Using adjectives:

  • The hairy, scary spider.
  • Using the ‘6 senses’: What do you see, hear, touch, taste, smell and feel (emotions)?

Grab your reader’s attention!

  • Using sounds: BANG! The door slammed behind me.
  • Using dialog: “Quick, it’s about to blow!” screamed the frightened woman.
