Fun With Place Value and Rounding Whole Numbers!

As students enter year 4, they are typically introduced to rounding numbers to the nearest ten and hundred. This important skill lays the foundation for other maths skills, such as estimating with the different operations. Teach Starter has put together an exciting rounding game to help your students strengthen their understanding of rounding 4-digit numbers.

This teacher-created resource includes a printable ladder game board, a set of detailed instructions, and 30 number cards for your students to use. Choose between the full-colour or low-colour options, or consider using the edible version if you want to change some of the numbers.Place value ladder game with teddy bear manipulatives sits on a desk

Tips and Tricks for Classroom Use

Print and laminate copies of the game board and number cards.

In turns, students must round the numbers on the number cards to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000 (depending on what is decided before starting the game). They move up the ladder on their game board if they round the number up. If they round the number down, they move down the ladder.

The student who reaches the top of the ladder on their game board first is the winner.

More comprehensive instructions on how to play the game are included in the resource.
