Hello Teach Starter. I have just completed these with my class. However, I am unsure of how to work out the AWPM. So if the formula is (words read correctly / minutes read), do we not take into account seconds? So if the child took 1 min and 25 seconds to read the text, do I use 1 as the denominator? Or do I turn them into seconds and have 85 as the denominator? Any help would be greatly appreciated ! Thank you!
Hi Chantelle, good question! Yes, you do include the seconds. And yes you convert the time into seconds. So, if your student read 30 words over 1 min 30 secs. Then your equation would look like this 30 / 90 = 0.333. But, then you need to times by 60 to get your average words per minute which would equal an average of 20 words per minute. I hope this helps!
Fantastic resource, will be using these with my Grade 3s to test for fluency. Thank you
