What Are the Three Levels of Australian Government?

Australia has three levels of government – local government, state government and federal government. Each level of government has a specific role and provides specific services to members of the Australian public. Australians aged 18 years and over vote to elect representatives to federal, state/territory parliaments and to local councils to make decisions on their behalf.

This classroom poster has been designed to support you in teaching your students about the three levels of the Australian government. It addresses the content outlined below.

Federal Government

The leader of the federal government is the Prime Minister. The federal parliament makes laws for the whole of Australia.

State Government

The leader of the state government is the Premier (or the Chief Minister in the two territories). State and territory parliaments make laws for their state or territory.

Local Government

The head of a local government is the Mayor or Shire President. Local governments look after the local community and make local laws, called by-laws.
