What Are Vegetation Zones?

Vegetation is just a fancy word for ‘plant!’ Different types of plants have different preferences for climatic and environmental factors such as soil type, rainfall and temperature. This means that different vegetation can be found in different locations around the world, depending on how hot or cold it is, or how wet or dry it is. Areas that contain similar types of plants are referred to as ‘vegetation zones.’

Create a Map of the World’s Vegetation

Use this Geography worksheet when teaching your students about world vegetation zones.

This black-and-white worksheet shows the seven continents of the world broken up according to vegetation zones. It includes a shading scaffold for students to use when identifying the locations of vegetation zones. Students must colour the map according to the correct vegetation zone, then fill in the key provided. Students will be introduced to the locations of the following:

  • coniferous forests
  • deciduous forests
  • deserts
  • grasslands
  • rainforests
  • tundras.
