A fun place value activity to help students consolidate their understanding of tens and ones.

Use this teaching resource in the classroom as a fun place value activity to help students understand that two-digit numbers are made up of tens and ones.

Provide each student with a copy of the ‘tens’ and ‘ones’ worksheet and the monster template. Students then cut out as many ‘tens’ and ‘ones’ as they wish and glue them onto their monster, creating spots, arms and legs. When they have finished, ask the students to count the number of ‘tens’ and ‘ones’ they have used to create their monster and record it in the place value table. Students then write the total value of their place value monster.

Alternatively, print, cut and laminate a class set for students to use as part of your numeracy rotations. Encourage students to draw their monsters in their workbooks and record the total value of their monster.

A 3-digit castle theme version of this resource is also available.
